Workers at Alicante-Elche Airport formed a symbolic number 10 to commemorate a decade since the current passenger terminal was opened. On 24 March 2011, the airport inaugurated a comprehensive renovation of its facilities, including – in addition to the terminal – a new parking area, roads and accesses and power plant, the construction of a thermo-refrigeration plant and an expansion of the aircraft parking tarmac.
Over the next few years, this enabled Alicante-Elche Airport – which was inaugurated in 1967 – to reach a record 15 million passengers in 2019, making it one of Spain’s busiest national and international airport hubs.
To mark the 10th anniversary, Aena (airport authority) personnel, airline representatives, national security forces and numerous companies operating in the airport complex joined together to form a number 10 on the aircraft parking tarmac – while strictly complying with all COVID-19 measures.
According to Aena, one reason for the initiative was to highlight the fact that, in spite of the current situation caused by the pandemic (which has resulted in huge decreases in passenger numbers at all Spanish airports), Alicante-Elche Airport still provides an essential service in the area and will continue to play a key infrastructural role in the economic and social revitalisation of Alicante province and other areas of influence.
Earlier this month, Alicante-Elche Airport was honoured with one of Airports Council International’s Airport Service Quality awards for “Best Hygiene Measures by Region” in 2020.
