Airports Council International has once again honoured Alicante-Elche Airport with one of the industry’s highest awards. For a second consecutive year, the airport has been named as the best in Europe for the quality of its service, in the category of airport facilities with annual traffic between five and 15 million passengers.
Bringing together 668 members operating 1,979 airports in 176 countries, the council honours airports around the world that offer the best customer experience in the opinion of their own passengers. In 2019, more than half of the world’s 8.8 billion travellers passed through an ASQ airport.
The Airport Service Quality (ASQ) program is the world’s leading passenger assessment and referral service, measuring passenger satisfaction according to 34 key performance indicators. The quality measurement system tests the level of service offered and compares it with airports of a similar size.
Alicante-Elche Airport joined the ACI’s ASQ program in 2013, and first achieved the award in 2018. During 2019, the airport – Spain’s fifth busiest (after Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas, Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, Palma de Mallorca and Málaga-Costa del Sol) – continued to implement ongoing measures aimed at improving the travelling experience for passengers and airport users.
These included an expansion and remodeling of the security control area; a revamp of restaurant amenities; the introduction of a free “personal shopper” service; improvements to “comfort areas” with the installation of a reading and relaxation space; and an increase in furniture items to create additional rest facilities.
“The fact that this is the second year we have received this award,” said airport director Laura Navarro, “means we have maintained a high level of quality in an increasingly demanding environment. ASQ surveys are a key element enabling us to listen to our passengers, and understand their motivations and preferences, so we can adapt the airport to travellers’ different profiles.
“I would like to highlight the important work undertaken by employees in the various companies that operate at Alicante-Elche Airport. They are all our main asset when it comes to continuing to improve services.”
Other Aena network airports recognised in the 2019 awards were Menorca (category between two and five million passengers), and El Hierro, Melilla and San Sebastián (airports with fewer than two million passengers).
The awards ceremony will be held during the second ACI Global Customer Experience Summit in Krakow (Poland) in September.
