Swedish tourists ranked Alicante among their most popular holiday spots for the Christmas-New Year period.
According to a list of international destinations compiled by the Norwegian airline company based on reservations by Swedish passengers during the festive season, five Spanish areas – all coastal – were included in the top-10.
Málaga led the way, followed by (in order): Alicante, London, Gran Canaria, Barcelona, Bangkok, Dubai, Tenerife, Berlin and Krabi.
Meanwhile, Alicante-Elche Airport welcomed its 15 millionth passenger at the end of the year, having previously registered a record 14 million annual travellers on 25 November.
The “surprised” traveller arrived on an EasyJet flight from London Southend Airport on 30 December. Alicante-Elche Airport director Laura Navarro welcomed him at foot of the aircraft and presented him with several gifts, including a pass for the VIP lounge at the airport terminal.
Representing the tourism sector were the general director of tourism for the Valencian regional government, Herick Campos, and the director for tourism intelligence, Mario Villar.
This winter season, which officially started on 27 October and ends on 28 March, Alicante-Elche Airport is offering 149 direct routes to 23 countries, highlighting the airport’s excellent connectivity with other destinations in Spain and around Europe.
