The world’s top road cyclists will be doing battle in Alicante province tomorrow (Saturday) in the latest leg of the Vuelta a España, one of the world’s three premier multi-stage races.
The field for this year’s 78th edition of the race includes 2022 champion Remco Evenepoel (Belgium) and Primoz Roglic (Slovenia) and Jonas Vingegaard (Denmark), winners of this year’s first first two cycling classics (the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France, respectively).
The eighth leg of the 2023 Vuelta is due to start at noon in Denia, before the pelotón travels through other Alicante municipalities including Els Poblets, Pego, Tollos, Fageca, Quatretondeta, Gorga, Benilloba, Benifallim, La Torre de les Maçanes, Ibi and Onil.
In total, they will cover 165 kilometres before reaching the finishing line in Xorret de Catí, a demanding mountain pass that has become a classic highlight of the Spanish race, due to its picturesque surroundings and tough ascent.
