Costa Blanca authorities are working closely with key tourism industry representatives with the aim of opening up the first-ever direct route between Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport and the United States.
During this month’s Fitur tourism fair in Madrid, Alicante provincial government president Carlos Mazón said the institution was working with tour operators, agencies and tourism associations to establish what would be a historic air connection for the area. He said this was one of the provincial tourism board’s main strategic objectives for 2023, a key year for reactivating travel.
“We have decided to go directly for the North American market, because there is still no direct line between the United States and the Costa Blanca and we are going to work hard to achieve this. The American public will discover that Alicante has a very high quality of services, is a base port for cruise ships, has one of the best archaeological museums in the world, and offers residential and language tourism for students, as well as already being one of the favourite destinations for British and other European tourists.”
Also attending Fitur was provincial tourism board president José Mancebo, who met with representatives of Spanish airport operator Aena to discuss opening up new routes and tourist markets, including the direct connection between Alicante and the United States.
He said the ultimate objective was to reach the record 15 million total of annual passengers achieved at Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport before the pandemic hit international travel.
“The aim we have set ourselves on the Costa Blanca is to strengthen the connections we have with our traditional markets, such as the British, Nordic, Dutch and Belgian, while also working on new destinations such as North America, taking advantage of the sector’s global recovery.”
